London Irish
This series of images was commissioned by the London Irish Centre, in Camden Town in 2015. I had previously photographed earlier generations of Irish immigrants that came to London in the fifties and sixties. Although many young Irish are again flocking to London, their experience is vastly different. Rather than it being a permanent move through necessity, they seem to be embracing the opportunity and turning it into a positive, empowering experience.
These portraits were taken in various locations around London and represent some of the new faces of the Irish diaspora. I have also included the often overlooked and unidentified part of the community, the second generation Irish. Those who feel as patriotic and passionate about their identity, but their accents and
geographic location dispute their authenticity.
The London Irish Centre has helped and supported the Irish community since opening its doors over sixty years ago. They have embraced the shift in Irish demographics
and culture whilst simultaneously preserving and promoting certain traditions and customs.
